force-feeding

In rural Mauritania, girls as young as five are encouraged to gain as much weight as possibly from childhood in order to make them marriageable.

Once they reach the age of 12 or 14, girls are sent evey year to ‘fat camps’ in the desert where they are fed 15,000 calories a day. They are forced to swallow gargantuan amounts of food and liquid and taking animal growth hormones to achieve female roudness and corpulence.

Having a fat wife is a sign of wealth and prestige in a country where food is in short supply. Slimmer women are considered inferior and bring shame on their families. It is this shame that has helped keep forced-fattening in practice.
